National Safety Month (NSM), celebrated every June by the National Safety Council and other organizations across the country, aims to reduce the leading causes of injury and death by raising safety awareness in three key places: at work, on the roads, and at home. In industrial situations, safety is an important factor in all areas. As a construction company, we are constantly focused on safety within our own facility and all projects. As a result, we have not had any recordable accident or injury since our establishment. Often times we are also called on to help other industries create safe working conditions in their establishments too.
The food manufacturing industry is just one player that has had many public safety issues. From bacterial contamination to improper manufacturing procedures, food safety is of major importance. Luckily, the Food Safety and Modernization Act (FSMA) reformed food safety laws to shift focus from reacting to contamination to preventing it from occurring altogether.
Take this example. One of our customers recently realized they had a huge problem to address at their facility. Wooden subfloor supported the production floor composed of carbon steel. The wood rotted when water found its way through the floor during regular manufacturing processes. The increased moisture of the wood created an ideal situation for bacterial growth. This kind of an environment was not suitable and under new management and ownership required an immediate fix.
Bacteria in a food plant is a serious problem for workers and consumers. Working with the customer, we have developed a plan to replace the floor and clear away the bacteria. First, we removed the current carbon steel floor plate and wood beneath it. Our next step? To install a new stainless steel floor, one of the cleanest options to eliminate any and all problems that the company had with bacteria. The new floor is water-resistant, easy to clean, sanitize, and is the best option for food manufacturing operations because it keeps unsanitary conditions at bay. Today, we are happy to report that everything in the plant is looking excellent under current construction!
During NSM, it is important to consider safety in all aspects of our lives. Companies must take action to protect the consumers too. In this situation, the customer took proactive steps to resolve the problem before it affected their product, as should all industry leaders.
Replacing a floor is a major undertaking but one that we have the capabilities to handle. We also have extensive experience with ensuring safety in safe food manufacturing operations, safety and injury protection platforms and access, safety guards, and safe plan of action, so keep us in mind when you need that extra hand.
