Process Piping – What You Need to Know

Process piping differs from plumbing by its primary purpose. When the piping is used as part of the manufacturing process to convey fuels, chemicals, gases, liquids, and other raw materials, the necessary pipework is considered process piping. In contrast, plumbing deals with secondary processes, which include water, chemical, and fuel supplies for equipment operation as well as the necessary waste or drainage of these supplies after use. Due to the distinction between these two types of pipework, systems and materials in process plumbing are also different.

Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams

P&IDs are similar to the more familiar flowchart used in a variety of organizations for planning and workflow processes. P&ID maps the various piping and components present in a process piping system’s flow process. In the simplest terms, it provides processing facilities with a graphic representation of four basic system features, including:

  • Details of piping and instruments
  • Schematics for control and shutdown
  • Demonstrates the implementation of safety and regulatory requirements
  • Guides basic start up and operational functions

Pipe Installation

Base Construction Inc. is capable of installing threaded (THR), socket weld (SW), butt-weld (BW), soldered end (SE), flanged (FLG), slip on glued (SOG), mechanical joint (MJ), fusion both socket and butt, grooved, and hydraulic coupling connection piping. Base Construction Inc. has certified welders (API, ASME B31.1 & B31.3, and City of LA). Our highly qualified pipefitters and welders make the codes requirement applicable and possible.

Pipe Routing Design and Implementation

Base Construction Inc. creates both in field and office isometric (ISO) drawings prior to fabrication and installation of piping. The Bottom of Pipe (BOP) elevation and Face of Flange (FOF) dimensions are established prior to hanging the pipe. Expansion loop and valve access are identified prior to pipe installation. Instrumentation locations are summarized to ease client needs. Insulation and accessibility and thickness are in consideration.

Pipe Support Design and Installation

Base Construction Inc. will analyze the need of pipe support, pipe bridge, and pipe rack. Since the existing pipe support may not be strong enough, Base Construction Inc. will study and design the revised pipe support system.

Selection of Valves both Manual and Control

Base Construction Inc. assists the client and recommends usage of certain manual or control valves and will install the valves. Piping & Instrumentation Drawing (P&ID), also known as Process & Instrumentation Drawing (P&ID), is one of Base Construction Inc. specialties! Base Construction Inc. can create a P&ID or revise a P&ID for implementation for our client. Base Construction Inc. can create pipe routing and install the piping from P&ID as required by clients. Piping layout, routing, creating, revision, and installation of all process piping are specialties of Base Construction Inc. Base Construction Inc, and its valued subcontractors can perform quality Electrical & Control (E&C) works as per project requirement. The design and built of programmable logic controllers (PLC) and Control Panel are performed.

Pipe Testing

It is essential to test the piping systems after fabrication and before operation. Base Construction Inc. has developed methods to do various pressurized and vacuumed tests. All pipe testing are non-destructive.

Pipe Painting and Labeling

While pipe installation, routing, and support are some of Base Construction’s specialties, pipe painting and labeling are essential to safe operation and usage of process piping.
