According to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), in the construction industry, over 800 employees die each year, and most of those numbers are from accidental falls. Whether it be from ladders, structural supports, or roofs it is imperative for business owners and employees alike to understand the risks within our field and to take proper safety precautions/practice safety at all times.
One particular area of concern to address within the aforementioned guidelines and part three of our safety series is the potential dangers of skylights.
Different regulations of skylights will vary based upon the specific height of window in which you are working with.
OSHA requires that all companies provide fall protection for their employees and workers are required to:
- Guard holes in floors
- Use toe-guards and rails around each elevated platform that has an open side, floor, or runway
- Provide toe-guards and guardrails to prevent workers from falling on dangerous equipment
- Use things such as safety harnesses, nets, railings, and handrails in other circumstances where employees could be at risk of falling
Since falls are a leading source of risk on the job, OSHA has started a campaign to help eliminate the risk of falls. The three point campaign includes:
- Planning ahead to make sure the job is done safely
- Providing employees with the right equipment
- Training employees on how to use equipment properly
